“I have been involved with the topic of smart homes since 2015. When I built a house myself, it was immediately clear to me that the house should have a smart home system. After all, as an engineer from the automotive industry, I was very enthusiastic about technology and future-oriented. After initial discussions with various architects and developers, disillusionment quickly set in. How secure your smart home is depends on which system you choose, for one thing. Secondly, it then depends on how the system is designed by you or the system integrator. Many factors play a role here. A radio-based system tends to be easier to reach from the outside than a wired one, just like WLAN. The manufacturers of smart home components have integrated various encryption methods in their products. This basically creates a high level of security. If you want it to be completely safe and you are willing to do without functions via WLAN or Internet functions (e.g. voice control using Alexa), then you have the maximum security with the KNX system. All data is transmitted via a cable within the building. The data via the KNX bus is encrypted by means of the new KNX Secure standard. In addition, we make sure in our systems that a KNX line that is routed outside the building (e.g. for a weather station or garden irrigation) is always designed as a separate outside line. If someone were to unplug the line and have the appropriate technical knowledge, they would not be able to access the devices and functions inside the building. But also keep in mind that a burglar is much more likely to use a crowbar than a laptop. Here it is only important that you have a good plan for expansion reserves in the electrical installation. The advantage of KNX over systems from other manufacturers is clear to see: More than 600 manufacturers now offer KNX components, and the trend is rising. This ensures that 10 or more years from now, there will still be enough products that are easily compatible with your system. Unfortunately, the situation is different for manufacturer-dependent systems. There, you may find that the manufacturer takes its products off the market, stops providing updates, or even goes bankrupt. Then, in the worst case, you will have to replace your entire system if something stops working.
